Slow down! Hand-held radars are on base Published Sept. 16, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Jordan Jones 162nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs TUCSON, Ariz. -- The 162nd Security Forces Squadron received their first hand-held radar intended to deter motorists from speeding on base. Radar guns were a recommendation stemming from the Environmental, Safety, Occupational Health, Compliance Assessment and Management Program (ESOHCAMP) inspection last January; a recommendation reinforced shortly thereafter by an accident resulting from excessive speed. "Our hope is that people will follow the base traffic laws and that this radar will never be needed - that six months from now we have zero violations," said Chief Master Sgt. Bill Minter, Security Forces manager. The speed limit on base is 15 miles per hour on streets and five miles per hour in parking lots and the flightline areas. Senior Airman Darrel Stone, a Security Forces specialist, demonstrated the use of the radar gun Sept. 12. Those who break the speed limit will be issued a ticket that will count against their on-base driving privileges, said Airman Stone who has been a member of the wing for five years. "Our intent is to ensure the safety of our personnel," said Chief Minter. "If someone receives a ticket it will not put points on your civilian license but does set you up for administrative action from the wing commander. It may result in loosing driving privileges on base to include private and government vehicles."
