Force support installs basketball court on base Published Dec. 10, 2010 By the Office of Public Affairs 162nd Fighter Wing TUCSON, Ariz. -- Basketball anyone? With only 92 acres on base the 162nd Force Support Squadron is working to maximize every square foot to better serve Airmen here. Soon the courtyard behind building 15, also known as TAGRA, will feature an outdoor basketball court that could double as a versatile space for social events and other athletic activities. The court will be open for pickup games and general use as soon as it's completed. Force support will announce details for a grand opening at a later date. "With all of our fitness requirement today, this is going to be a good addition to our wing," said Capt. Paul Jefferson, project manager for the squadron. Jefferson anticipates that force support will eventually organize intramural basketball and volleyball seasons for wing members. "In force support, our business is people and we think this court could go a long way to serve our fitness needs as well as enhance morale," he said. "We can hold organized [physical training] events out here, we can administer fitness testing here, and we hope to eventually install a cover over this area to give some shade for the hotter months." The new court is made of plastic and rubber tiles that provide a moderate amount of shock absorption, allows for water runoff in the monsoon season, and can hold up under the heat of the desert sun.
