Arizona Air National Guard firefighters responded to an emergency at the GE Apparatus Service center on Valencia Road after a transformer next to the building exploded and began burning, Jan. 7.

At about 2 p.m. Airmen assigned to the 162nd Fighter Wing, located across the street from the service center, heard the explosion and immediately responded with an aircraft crash rescue truck and doused the flames.

"In my mind we saved the building," said Chief Master Sgt. Shane Clark, 162nd Fighter Wing fire chief. "The first response with the rescue truck without a doubt contained the fire and kept it from causing extensive damage inside."

Within minutes, Tucson Fire and Police arrived on the scene to help contain the fire and direct traffic. No one was injured in the incident.
